Electronic Arts has brought 25 classic titles back to modern storefronts, following the discovery of a long-forgotten archive at the company’s Redwood Shores headquarters. As reported by Kotaku, the initiative began in 2022 when EA Senior Producer Jim Vessella stumbled upon a storage room filled with nearly 20,000 archival assets, including Betacam tapes, VHS, film reels, and CD-ROMs.

The Preservation Process

The four-year project involved digitizing the media and working alongside the gaming community to ensure quality. For the Wing Commander series, Vessella established a Slack channel with dedicated fans to iterate on builds, troubleshoot crashes, and playtest missions. This deep collaboration helped refine the 35th and 30th Anniversary editions of the sci-fi franchise.

Beyond technical restoration, the team tackled the complex challenge of relicensing original soundtracks. For the Road Rash 30th Anniversary Edition, Vessella detailed a desperate search for a band member whose approval was needed to keep the music intact. The team successfully secured the final license in mid-September 2026, just days before they would have been forced to remove the tracks from the release.

Enhanced Releases and Ports

The collection, now available on Steam and GOG, is split between enhanced anniversary editions and original ports. The seven enhanced titles include:

  • Road Rash: 30th Anniversary Edition
  • Wing Commander: 35th Anniversary Edition
  • Wing Commander II: Vengeance of the Kilrathi: 35th Anniversary Edition
  • Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger: 30th Anniversary Edition
  • Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom: 30th Anniversary Edition
  • Wing Commander Prophecy: 30th Anniversary Edition
  • Privateer 2: The Darkening: 30th Anniversary Edition

Additionally, 18 classic ports have been released, including Ultima I, II, and IV, The Complete Edition of Ultima VII, and both Ultima Underworld entries.

Why it matters

For players, this release represents a rare victory for digital preservation, making foundational PC gaming history accessible again on modern hardware. By partnering with community modders and GOG’s preservation team, EA has managed to revive titles that were previously trapped in legacy formats.

This release is currently available globally via Steam and GOG, with the full 25-game bundle seeing a discount of over 50 percent. Gamers looking to experience these classics should keep an eye on these platforms for potential updates or community-driven patches as these older titles settle into modern operating systems.
