Mega Man: Dual Override is the first new numbered Mega Man game since Mega Man 11 in 2018, and it brings Proto Man into the action as a second playable hero. Capcom has set it for spring 2027, the year of the series’ 40th anniversary, on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

What Dual Override is

Revealed at The Game Awards in December 2025, Dual Override is the 12th main entry in the classic series. It keeps the familiar formula: a 2D side-scrolling platformer in which you defeat Robot Masters, take their weapons and use them against the next boss.

The twist is in the title. Players control both Mega Man and Proto Man, each with distinct abilities, which opens up different ways to approach stages and bosses.

New mechanics

Two new systems sit on top of the classic run-and-gun play. Chips can be equipped before a stage to modify each character’s abilities, letting players tailor a loadout to a level or a Robot Master. The Override feature builds a meter during play, and once it is full you can unleash more powerful attacks.

Capcom is also inviting fans into development through a Robot Master design contest. Six community submissions will be selected, and one grand-prize design will be built into the game as a boss.

Nintendo’s September 9, 2026 Direct also confirmed Mega Man and Proto Man amiibo to launch alongside the game in spring 2027.

Series context

Mega Man debuted on the NES in 1987 and has been one of Capcom’s most reinvented franchises, spanning the X, Zero, ZX, Legends and Battle Network lines. The classic series went quiet for years before Mega Man 11 revived it in 2018 after a gap of more than eight years between numbered entries. Since then, collections and re-releases have kept the older games available, but there had been no new mainline title until this announcement.

The timing also fits a wider market trend. Retro-inspired 2D action has done well in recent years, largely thanks to indie studios, and Dual Override puts one of the genre’s founding series back in that conversation.

Why it matters

For long-time fans, this is the classic Mega Man experience returning with its most significant change in years: two playable characters and a customisation layer through chips. For newcomers, the wide platform list, including the original Switch and last-generation PlayStation and Xbox consoles, makes it one of the easiest new releases of 2027 to pick up.

The key things to watch before launch are how different Mega Man and Proto Man feel in practice, whether the chip and Override systems add depth without diluting the series’ precise platforming, and which fan-designed Robot Master makes the final cut.
