Clean Up Liberty City’s Jagged Edges with the DLSS IV Mod

Grand Theft Auto IV, released in 2008, has long been infamous for its shimmering, jagged anti-aliasing. While Rockstar Games has updated its modding guidelines ahead of the launch of GTA 6—prohibiting unofficial story missions or unauthorized ports—the developer has not restricted graphical enhancement mods. Modder ChunkLeChuck has released a new tool, ‘DLSS IV,’ which brings modern upscaling and anti-aliasing support to the base game.

Modernizing GTA IV’s Visuals

The DLSS IV mod provides three distinct options for cleaning up the game’s visuals: Nvidia’s DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) for GeForce RTX cards, DLAA (Deep Learning Anti-Aliasing) for high-quality edge smoothing without upscaling, and AMD’s FSR 3 for broader GPU compatibility. Unlike previous, more intensive mods like Warcaco’s RTX Remix—which bundled texture and path-tracing overhauls—ChunkLeChuck’s release serves as a lightweight fix specifically targeting the game’s aging anti-aliasing implementation. All three options are compatible with HDR displays, offering a refreshed look for those revisiting Liberty City today.

Requirements and Considerations

Because the base game is nearly two decades old, the hardware requirements to run it are minimal. Even mid-range modern hardware, such as an RTX 3060, is more than sufficient to handle the game with these enhancements enabled. While DLSS and FSR offer performance benefits by upscaling, DLAA is purely for visual clarity and will not improve framerates.

It is worth noting that while rumors suggested Rockstar once considered a modern remaster of GTA IV around 2022, those plans were reportedly shelved following the poor reception of the GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. For now, community-made mods remain the primary way to modernize the experience for PC players. Ensure your PC is running the base version of the game, and you can apply these technical updates to smooth out those long-standing visual artifacts.
