The iconic studio behind legendary RPG franchises like Mass Effect and Dragon Age, BioWare, is shutting down after three decades in the industry. As reported by Game Developer, the studio announced the closure on social media, emphasizing that their current focus is supporting the talented team members affected by the transition.
Wider EA Restructuring
Beyond the closure of BioWare, Electronic Arts is initiating a broader wave of layoffs impacting 400 employees across the organization. According to Bloomberg, as reported by Game Developer, this corporate shift involves the cancellation and prioritization of several internal projects. Notably, the planned Sims project known as “Project Lotus” has been canceled, while a project codenamed “Project Evergreen” has been moved up in priority. Additionally, resources are being diverted away from the development of the online skateboarding title *skate*.
This decision follows a “hard look at the business” conducted by EA leadership, including Chief Operating Officer David Tinson and Chief Studios Officer Cam Weber. In a letter to staff, the executives stated that these moves are intended to align investments and talent with the greatest opportunities for long-term growth. These layoffs occur in the wake of the company’s prior purchase by an investor group including the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF), Silver Lake and Affinity Partners, a deal that previously raised concerns among staff regarding the potential for project dissolutions and cuts.
A Legacy of RPG History
BioWare’s closure marks the end of a massive chapter in gaming. Founded in 1995, the studio broke onto the scene with 1997’s *Shattered Steel* before defining the role-playing genre for generations with titles like *Baldur’s Gate*, *Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic*, and *Jade Empire*. The studio’s recent history, however, was marked by challenges following the release of *Dragon Age: Inquisition*. Former executive producer Mark Darrah has noted via his YouTube channel that the studio struggled as EA pivoted toward multiplayer live-service models, leading to the tumultuous development of *Anthem* and the mixed reception of *Mass Effect: Andromeda*. Despite the 2024 release of *Dragon Age: The Veilguard*, the studio confirmed that its planned new entry in the *Mass Effect* series has been officially canceled.
Why it matters
For players, the closure of BioWare represents the loss of a studio that helped shape the modern narrative-driven RPG. Those who were looking forward to the future of the *Mass Effect* franchise will be most impacted, as the studio confirmed that the project currently in development has been scrapped as part of these closures.
While the industry landscape continues to shift, the impact of these layoffs hits the developers who brought these worlds to life the hardest. Players should keep an eye on how these resource shifts affect the long-term support for existing titles like *skate* and the future of the *Star Wars* franchise, as Respawn and DICE are reportedly collaborating on a potential new *Star Wars: Battlefront* entry amid this corporate realignment.
