Bungie has officially shared the roadmap for its project to restore vaulted content to Destiny 2, confirming a long-term plan that stretches into 2028. According to reporting from Beebom, the studio intends to make the game feel “whole” again by bringing back a significant portion of its retired library.

The Roadmap to 2028

Following an announcement in September 2026 that reversed previous plans to shut down the game, Bungie provided an updated timeline in its October 2026 Community Update. Josh Deane, the studio’s head of product, noted that the project is currently in the pre-production phase. The studio expects to wrap up pre-production by January or February 2027, with full production on the porting process beginning shortly thereafter. The current target for the final release of this unvaulted content is February or March 2028.

Content Returning to the Game

Bungie has confirmed the first wave of content slated for the return. Players can expect the restoration of several major campaigns, including Red War, Forsaken, Curse of Osiris, and Warmind. This restoration will also encompass their associated Strikes, Raids, and Raid Lairs. Additionally, the Menagerie PvE activity is scheduled to return, featuring overhauled rewards for players.

Beyond these core experiences, Bungie is prioritizing several other areas for future updates, including free-roam destinations, public events, Lost Sectors, and seasonal activities spanning from Season 9 (Sundial) to Season 23 (The Coil). The studio is also planning updates for existing Raid and Raid Lair weapons. However, Bungie specified that there are currently no plans to update New Light content, seasonal story missions, or specific areas like the Kell’s Grave Gambit map.

Why it matters

For the Destiny 2 community, this roadmap represents a massive shift from the studio’s previous trajectory. After years of content being rotated out of the game, players now have a firm timeline for when they can re-experience fan-favorite campaigns and activities. This transition aims to resolve long-standing concerns regarding game preservation and the overall narrative cohesion of the Destiny 2 experience.

While the 2028 timeline requires patience, the commitment to restoring these legacy elements indicates a clear change in the game’s long-term support model. Players should watch for interim updates, as the studio plans to roll out celebration updates while the primary content-porting process continues in the background.
