The development of the recently released Star Wars: Galactic Racer was heavily influenced by the Netflix docuseries Drive to Survive, according to Matt Webster, head of the game’s developer, Fuse Games.
In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz at Game Republic New Horizons, Webster explained that the team wanted to capture the same sense of drama and rivalry found in Formula 1 racing. Beyond just the action on the track, the developers focused on the tension and personal dynamics that occur behind the scenes.
Focusing on the Paddock
Webster noted that the game’s paddock sequences were a key design priority, serving as a primary way to immerse players in the Star Wars universe and bring them into close contact with iconic characters. These areas are meant to act as a crucial pacing mechanism, providing a “lower intensity space” that contrasts with the high-speed racing segments. According to Webster, incorporating this “light and shade” ensures that players aren’t constantly overwhelmed by the intensity of the track, allowing for a more balanced experience.
A Return to Racing
Star Wars: Galactic Racer arrived on October 6 for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Amazon Luna, marking the first title in the genre for the Star Wars franchise since 2002. Following its launch, the game has seen positive reception, currently maintaining an 88 score on Metacritic for the PS5 version. Webster previously told GamesIndustry.biz that the project was fueled by the belief that the market was ready for a return to racing titles, noting that as the gaming population grows, even niche genres can find a substantial audience.
Why it matters
For players, this development approach means that Star Wars: Galactic Racer aims to be more than just a speed-focused racing title. By prioritizing the “off-track” narrative and character interaction, the game attempts to emulate the dramatic, season-long stakes popularized by modern sports storytelling.
Players should look for these character-driven moments in the paddock to serve as a mental breather between races. As the first major Star Wars racing entry in over two decades, it serves as a litmus test for whether the genre can successfully capture the interest of today’s players by blending arcade-style racing with deeper, narrative-focused social mechanics.
