EA Sports is shifting its focus toward a new, experimental direction for its American football portfolio, officially confirming the development of an open-world title currently codenamed Project Gridiron. According to an official letter regarding the company’s future, as reported by IGN, this upcoming title is being built as a social-first open-world experience that is distinct from the established Madden and College Football franchises. The announcement confirms that the publisher is looking to expand its footprint in the sports gaming genre beyond its traditional annual simulation releases.

EA describes the project as a brand-new experience that will be revealed in further detail over the coming months. While the publisher confirmed the project’s existence, specific mechanics remain unconfirmed. It is currently unclear if the title will feature a narrative-driven campaign, a persistent online universe similar to other sports titles like NBA 2K, or a more mature, gritty tone similar to what the studio accomplished with Fight Night Champion. Madden previously dabbled in narrative-driven campaigns during the mid-to-late 2010s, but eventually shifted its focus toward a broader career mode, leaving the door open for how Project Gridiron might integrate these elements.

The announcement was paired with news that EA is also in pre-production on a new entry in the long-dormant Fight Night boxing series, which has been absent from the market for over a decade. The studio plans to leverage capabilities from its simulation fighting team to bring back this fan-favorite franchise. EA indicated that players will hear more about both Project Gridiron and the new Fight Night entry in the next few months, with speculation regarding potential reveals during major industry events like The Game Awards or early 2027.

Why it matters

For players, the introduction of Project Gridiron raises questions about the future landscape of the EA sports lineup. With Madden and the College Football series already occupying a significant portion of the annual sports gaming calendar, the potential addition of a third football-themed title poses a major challenge: can the market sustain three separate football experiences from the same publisher simultaneously? Players should continue to monitor official updates to determine if this project represents a complete transformation of how EA approaches its football simulations or if it serves as a separate, social-focused alternative to the annual Madden release.

The emergence of Project Gridiron also arrives amid reports of internal financial friction regarding the costs of NIL rights and licensing for the College Football series. With reports noting that sales for the college title have declined year-over-year, some developers have expressed concern that the franchise’s return could be short-lived. This context leads to lingering uncertainty regarding whether Project Gridiron is intended to evolve the sport within EA’s portfolio or if it is being positioned as a potential future replacement for existing franchises if financial or licensing pressures continue to mount.
