Since the launch of Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave several weeks ago, the game’s expansive cast has kept players busy exploring its deep strategy mechanics. Among the many characters introduced, one has clearly stood out to the community: Fabio, the enigmatic and condescending scholar who serves as Dietrich’s right-hand man in the Heroic Games tournament.

The voice behind the scholar

According to an interview with Polygon, actor Jimmie Yamaguchi credits a legendary Disney villain as the core inspiration for Fabio’s vocal delivery. Yamaguchi explained that he aimed for a “mid-Atlantic accent” to represent a character who has lived in various regions, and he used Jeremy Irons’ portrayal of Scar from The Lion King as his starting point.

“When I got the specs, before I started reading the lines, I did something like, ‘Well, I was first in line… until the little hairball was born.’ And then I went into the line as I did it, so that way, I could kind of get an idea,” Yamaguchi told Polygon. By channeling the conniving tone of Scar, the actor was able to capture the sharp, intellectual arrogance that defines Fabio’s interactions within the game.

An emotional response to the playerbase

Yamaguchi, who has previously contributed to titles like Zenless Zone Zero and Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, noted that the warm reception to Fabio has been a standout experience in his career. Acting often requires performing in a vacuum, which can leave voice actors unsure of how their work lands with an audience.

“Because sometimes when you’re acting, you’re acting into the void, and you never necessarily get the response back. It meant so much to me that people enjoyed it… To all of you who said all those wonderful things, thank you, truly, from the bottom of my heart,” Yamaguchi shared in the interview.

Why it matters

For players, this insight into the character’s creation highlights the attention to detail poured into the performances of Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave. It is rare for a character to capture the imagination of a fanbase so quickly after a game’s release, and Fabio’s popularity underscores how a nuanced vocal performance can elevate an already complex RPG script. As players continue to work their way through the Heroic Games tournament, this revelation adds a layer of depth to every scene featuring the scholar. The game is currently available on Nintendo Switch 2.
