Nintendo has announced Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity – Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch 2, bringing the 2020 Zelda spinoff to the newer console with performance upgrades, a new difficulty mode and all of its downloadable content. The game launches in late February 2027 at $59.99, and physical copies in at least Europe and Japan will come as a Game-Key Card rather than a full cartridge.
What is in the Definitive Edition
The Definitive Edition includes the full base game plus all Expansion Pass content from the original release, which covers the Pulse of the Ancients and Guardian of Remembrance packs. On top of that, Nintendo and Koei Tecmo have added a new Calamity Mode with increased difficulty.
The biggest upgrade is technical. The original Switch version was known for frame rate drops during busy battles, and the Definitive Edition promises higher frame rates and more enemies on screen at once, using Switch 2’s more powerful hardware. Existing save data can be transferred from the Switch 1 version, so returning players do not need to start over.
Price and upgrade path
The Definitive Edition costs $59.99. Players who already own Age of Calamity on Switch get a 50% discount, bringing the price to $29.99. Digital owners receive the discount automatically on their account. Physical owners can claim it by updating the original game to version 1.4.1 or later and selecting “Proceed to Nintendo eShop” from the main menu. Nintendo is selling this as a standalone Definitive Edition rather than a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack.
What a Game-Key Card means
A Game-Key Card is not a smaller storage format. The card contains a licence rather than the game itself, so players must download the full game after inserting it, which requires an internet connection and free storage. The format has been confirmed for the European and Japanese physical releases, while the North American format had not been confirmed at the time of the announcement.
Game-Key Cards have become common on Switch 2, especially for third-party games, but they remain controversial with players who want a physical copy that works without a download.
Why it matters
For players who skipped Age of Calamity because of its performance on the original Switch, the Definitive Edition is the version to wait for. Smoother frame rates matter a great deal in a musou game where large crowds of enemies are the whole point, and the bundled DLC makes it a complete package.
For existing owners, the 50% discount and save transfer make the upgrade easier to justify. Anyone buying physically should check the packaging in their region: in markets where the release is a Game-Key Card, the game will need to be downloaded before it can be played, which matters for players with limited storage or slower connections.
