The long-time producer and caretaker of The Legend of Zelda series, Eiji Aonuma, has officially been knighted by the French Ministry of Culture. As reported by Kotaku, Aonuma traveled to Paris this week to receive the title of Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters for his decades of work in the gaming industry.

A legacy of adventure

During the ceremony, Minister of Culture Catherine Pégard honored Aonuma, describing him as a storyteller who consistently preserves space for the player’s imagination. She thanked the veteran developer for his role in inspiring children around the world to dream through the lens of Link’s adventures. Aonuma, who has been with Nintendo since 1988, rose to prominence as a director on *The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time* and has since served as a core producer for every mainline entry in the franchise, from the era of the Nintendo 64 through the modern *Breath of the Wild* and the recent remake projects.

International recognition for game developers

Although the French Ministry of Culture announced their intent to honor Aonuma back in 2023, the formal ceremony took place just this past week. Aonuma joins a diverse list of artists receiving the distinction, including jazz musician Kenny Garrett, actress Richa Chadha, and *Ranma ½* creator Rumiko Takahashi.

While knighthoods are granted across various artistic mediums, game developers have increasingly been recognized by the ministry. Nintendo icon Shigeru Miyamoto received the title in 2006, followed by Peter Molyneux in 2007. The ministry also recently announced plans to honor the entire studio behind *Clair Obscur: Expedition 33*, marking a shift in how the government acknowledges collaborative game development.

Why it matters

For players, this recognition serves as a testament to the cultural impact of The Legend of Zelda series. While the knighthood itself is a formal honor rather than a change to game mechanics or release schedules, it underscores the elevated status of game design as a legitimate and celebrated form of artistic expression on the global stage.

Following the ceremony, Aonuma shared a sentiment in French directed at his wife and his fanbase, stating, “Thank you for following me this far, let’s continue the adventure together.” As the series continues to evolve with modern remakes and new entries, players can expect the same creative philosophy Aonuma has championed for decades to remain at the heart of the franchise.
