Minecraft developers have rolled out Snapshot 5 for the 26.4 update, introducing a suite of winter-themed additions that focus on both creative building and tactical gameplay. According to reporting from Beebom, this update brings new construction materials, a fresh advancement, and technical tweaks for Windows players.
New Building Options with Packed Ice Bricks
Builders have a new set of tools to work with thanks to the introduction of Packed Ice Bricks. These are crafted using a simple 2×2 grid of four Packed Ice blocks. Once crafted, you can use a Stonecutter to produce Slab, Stair, Wall, and Chiseled variants. Beyond just aesthetics, these blocks have functional interactions; if you feed them to a Sulfur Cube mob, the creature gains the ‘Fast Sliding’ archetype.
Advancements and Environmental Changes
For those looking to test their skills against new hazards, the snapshot adds a challenge called “What Goes Around Comes Around.” To unlock this, players must defeat a Frostbite zombie using an Ice Ball. Beebom notes that Frostbites can also cause griefing damage; their Ice Ball projectiles are capable of breaking Decorated Pots, Chorus Flowers, and Speleothem blocks, which is something to keep in mind if you are constructing a base in Ice Caves.
Additionally, Mojang has added ambient sounds to regular Ice blocks. These sounds trigger under specific conditions, requiring a surrounding ring of eight ice blocks, with an air block above and a water block below.
Technical Improvements
Windows users can now test an experimental “Prefer DXGI Present” setting. When active, this option enables DirectX support for the game. According to the source, this may lead to better variable refresh rate compatibility, smoother fullscreen alt-tabbing, and improvements to the input method editor (IME).
Why it matters
For players, these updates primarily affect those who enjoy building in or exploring the game’s colder biomes. The addition of packed ice variants gives creators significantly more architectural freedom for ice-themed structures.
Tactically, players need to be more cautious when defending their bases in icy regions. Since Frostbites can now destroy decorative blocks like pots and flowers with their projectiles, you may need to reconsider the placement of delicate items in your ice-based builds to prevent accidental damage. If you are playing on Windows, the new experimental DirectX setting is worth monitoring, as it could provide a more stable experience for those who frequently switch between apps or have monitors with high refresh rates.
