If you have been holding onto memories of the early 2000s squad-based action platformer, you are in luck. As reported by IGN, Aspyr Media officially announced Shrek 2 Remastered during the October 2026 ID@Xbox showcase. This modern version of the cult classic tie-in game, originally published by Activision in 2004, is scheduled to arrive on Xbox Series X/S on November 10, 2026.
The original Shrek 2 title was a staple of the original Xbox era, also appearing on the GameCube and PlayStation 2. It was widely known for its four-player co-op action, which allowed players to journey through familiar locations like Shrek’s swamp. By swapping between fan-favorite characters including Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, and Gingy, players were tasked with tag-teaming baddies, using individual special abilities to solve puzzles, and completing various mission objectives. This new remaster promises to update that beloved experience with improved graphics, new features, and a modern polish, all while retaining the squad-based structure that defined the original console experience.
In a move that caught many off-guard, Aspyr used the reveal trailer to take a lighthearted jab at the looming release of Grand Theft Auto 6. While most publishers are intentionally avoiding the mid-November launch window to stay out of the way of Rockstar’s massive release, Shrek 2 Remastered is keeping its November 10 date, landing just nine days before the November 19 launch of GTA 6. The reveal trailer leans into this competitive landscape with a satirical recreation of the Vice City aesthetic and a parody of the iconic GTA box art style.
Pre-orders are currently open for those looking to return to the swamp. With the release date set for just a few short weeks away, players have very little time to wait before they can once again tackle the adventure with their friends. As the ID@Xbox fall presentation concludes, fans are encouraged to keep checking for further updates on the release.
Why it matters
For fans of the original era of licensed tie-in games, this remaster represents a rare chance to revisit a cult classic with modern quality-of-life upgrades. The ability to jump back into a four-player, local co-op adventure is a significant draw for players looking for a nostalgic experience that does not take itself too seriously, even when going head-to-head with one of the most anticipated game launches in recent history.
