Developing a game as massive as Grand Theft Auto 6 is rarely a straight line, but new insights reveal just how much turmoil went on behind the scenes at Rockstar Games. According to reporting from Dexerto, which cites details shared by journalist Jason Schreier, the studio spent years grappling with the challenge of blending the immersive, grounded mechanics of Red Dead Redemption 2 with the chaotic, fast-paced nature of the GTA series.
The battle for the weapon wheel
This creative tug-of-war reportedly caused significant internal friction between 2019 and 2022. One of the primary casualties of this indecision was the game’s inventory system. Developers wanted to move away from the traditional, unlimited GTA weapon wheel in favor of a more realistic limitation on how many firearms a player could carry—similar to the system found in Red Dead Redemption 2.
Schreier noted that the team spent “months, if not years” testing a “million different things” to replace the iconic wheel, including various web and tray-style interfaces and even experiments removing the UI entirely. Ultimately, the team found that these alternatives didn’t fit the flow of the game, leading them to circle back to the classic weapon wheel design that players are already familiar with.
Development churn and staff exits
This extended phase of experimentation created a sense of stagnant progress for many on the development team. The lack of a clear direction during those years of prototyping features that were eventually scrapped led to frustration, with some designers choosing to leave the studio during the development period.
However, the outlook reportedly shifted toward the end of 2022 and early 2023. According to the report, things began to click once the studio finalized its vision, a process that was bolstered by the release of the first trailer in December 2023. While the weapon wheel remains, GTA 6 will still incorporate other Red Dead-inspired elements, such as a Criminal Profile system and limited weapon carry capacity, as confirmed by its appearance in the recent Netflix Extended Look footage.
Why it matters
For players, this glimpse into the development process highlights the complexity of balancing the “arcade” identity of Grand Theft Auto with the studio’s desire to push for modern, immersive simulation mechanics. While the familiar weapon wheel is sticking around, the confirmed shift toward limited weapon capacity and more reactive NPC behavior suggests that GTA 6 will feel distinctly more grounded than its predecessor.
These design choices signal a move toward more deliberate gameplay, where your choice of gear and public visibility will likely hold more weight.
