The launch window for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has brought in over 200,000 concurrent players on Steam, marking a solid start for the latest installment in the long-running shooter franchise. According to reporting from Game Rant, which cites data from SteamDB, the game hit a peak of 227,434 concurrent users during its opening weekend.
While this performance is healthy, it falls short of the figures recorded during the debut of Black Ops 6 in October 2024, which peaked at approximately 306,460 concurrent Steam players. This puts Modern Warfare 4 roughly 26% behind its predecessor in terms of peak Steam engagement. However, the game has significantly outperformed the 2025 release of Black Ops 7, which reached only about 100,000 concurrent players at launch.
Understanding the numbers
As noted by Game Rant, these Steam statistics are aggregated through a single shared Call of Duty launcher, meaning the total count includes players engaging with Warzone and other titles within the ecosystem. While this makes the data an imperfect representation of any single game’s population, it remains the most reliable public metric for comparing the franchise’s momentum across different releases.
The comparison is further complicated by differences in platform availability. Black Ops 6 was made available on PC Game Pass at launch, offering players an alternative to purchasing the game on Steam. Modern Warfare 4, conversely, currently requires a separate purchase, as Activision has indicated it will not join the Game Pass service until Holiday 2027. Despite the lack of Game Pass availability, which would typically drive more players toward a single storefront like Steam, the 2024 Black Ops 6 launch remains the higher peak.
Why it matters
For players, the metrics suggest that while Modern Warfare 4 did not hit the same explosive peak as Black Ops 6, it has secured a strong following out of the gate. The game is currently seeing a ‘Very Positive’ reception on Steam, with 80% of English-language reviews recommending the title. Early praise for the single-player campaign has been particularly high, helping the game maintain significant goodwill despite ongoing community discussions surrounding multiplayer balance and technical performance.
The real test for Modern Warfare 4 will be its ability to maintain these player counts through the coming seasons. With no official figures yet released for console or Battle.net performance, these Steam figures only tell a partial story. Whether the positive reception can sustain a larger active player base over time—rather than just a short-lived launch spike—remains the key factor to watch as Infinity Ward begins its planned content updates.
