If you’ve been trying to jump into some matches of Street Fighter 5 recently, you’ve likely noticed that the servers are down. According to a report by Video Games Chronicle, Capcom has taken the drastic step of delisting the title from the PlayStation Store and Steam while simultaneously disabling its online infrastructure.

The PHP Vulnerability

The disruption stems from two major security vulnerabilities recently discovered in the PHP programming language. These flaws were identified by cybersecurity researchers using AI to probe the long-standing web development language. While many services across the internet have already patched these issues, Capcom has identified that the current infrastructure powering the PS4 and PC versions of Street Fighter 5 remains vulnerable to potential exploits.

In a series of statements posted to the official Street Fighter X account and the game’s Steam page, Capcom confirmed that emergency maintenance is currently underway. The publisher explained that the online features have been deactivated specifically to strengthen security protocols related to the game’s use of PHP. As part of this process, the game has been removed from digital storefronts in stages.

Playing Offline

While the online component of the game is currently a no-go, Capcom has confirmed that owners can still access the game’s offline content. If you have the title already installed on your console or PC, you can still launch the game and play through local modes. However, the company has not provided a specific timeline for when the online servers will be back up or when the game will reappear on the PlayStation Store and Steam. Capcom has apologized for the inconvenience and is asking players to remain patient as they work toward a fix.

Why it matters

This is a major headache for the competitive community and casual players who rely on Street Fighter 5’s online matchmaking and ranked modes. If you were planning on buying the game today, you are currently out of luck as it has been scrubbed from storefronts. For those who already own it, you are effectively restricted to single-player or local versus matches until the patch is deployed.

While this highlights the broader reality of how global security vulnerabilities—like those in the PHP language—can force even legacy games offline, it serves as a reminder to check official developer social media channels for updates on service restorations. Players across all regions should expect to wait until Capcom officially confirms the return of online functionality.
