Dan Greenawalt, the longtime director of Forza Motorsport and a foundational figure at Turn 10 Studios, is retiring from Microsoft after a 27-year tenure. The news was reported by IGN, following an internal memo seen by The Verge that confirmed his departure, marking the end of an era for the racing franchise.

A Legacy in Racing Games

Trevor Williams, head of Playground Games, confirmed the departure in an internal note, noting that “it’s hard to overstate Dan’s impact.” Greenawalt’s history with the company stretches back to the launch of the original Xbox, where he helped ship Project Gotham Racing in 2001. He later founded Turn 10 Studios and oversaw eight Forza Motorsport titles that spanned four generations of Xbox hardware. These titles were consistently well-regarded by critics, with IGN noting that every entry in the main series achieved a score of 8 out of 10 or higher.

Organizational Changes

Greenawalt’s retirement follows a period of significant restructuring for the racing teams at Xbox. Last month, Playground Games—the studio behind the Forza Horizon franchise—was merged with Turn 10 Studios as part of a larger organizational reset. The future of the Motorsport series appears uncertain; following layoffs at Turn 10 last year, reports indicate the team has been moved to support roles for the more commercially successful Forza Horizon series. Furthermore, the 2023 release of Forza Motorsport, which was initially envisioned as an evolving platform, is now reportedly not receiving any further new content updates.

Why it matters

For players who have followed the Forza series for years, this departure signifies a massive shift in the leadership and direction of the franchise. With Greenawalt’s exit and the consolidation of the development teams, the Motorsport branch of the series seems to be entering a period of dormancy. Players should be aware that the 2023 Forza Motorsport title is currently not slated for additional content, effectively signaling a halt to the game’s original evolution plans. As the focus shifts toward the Forza Horizon series, fans of the more simulation-oriented Motorsport games should keep an eye on future announcements to see if the franchise has a roadmap beyond its current state.
