Overview

Known story

What official material tells us about this character so far.

Where she comes from

Germany. Killjoy is the youngest agent in the Protocol and the one who most obviously does not need to be in the room to beat you.

She is written as an inventor first and an operative second, and the ordering matters. Other agents were recruited for what they can do. Killjoy was recruited for what she can build, and the difference shows up in every round she plays.

What she actually is

Killjoy is delegation. Every sentinel in VALORANT holds ground, and most of them do it by standing on it. She does it by leaving objects behind and walking away.

That is a genuinely different relationship with a map. A Cypher setup tells you what happened. A Killjoy setup does something about it. Her gadgets damage, they slow, they detain, and none of them require her to be looking at the thing they are hitting.

What she does in a game

Sentinel. Her nanoswarm is a grenade that lies hidden on the floor until she manually triggers it, releasing a swarm that shreds anyone standing over it. Her alarmbot hides, chases any enemy that enters its range, and explodes with a Vulnerable debuff attached. Her turret watches a forward cone and fires on its own. Both the bot and the turret can be recalled and redeployed.

Her ultimate is a large device with a long, loud windup that detains every enemy in a wide radius when it completes. It can be destroyed, and destroying it is usually the entire round.

What it feels like

Playing Killjoy is playing chess against people who think they are playing a shooter. You set a site, you leave, and you are somewhere useful when the enemy walks into the thing you left. The nanoswarm in particular rewards patience in a way almost nothing else in the game does, because it does nothing at all until you decide it should.

The catch is that her utility has a leash. Move too far from a site and your gadgets go dormant, which means her flexibility is smaller than her toolkit suggests. A Killjoy who over-rotates has disarmed herself.

Playing against her is a shopping list. Kill the turret, kill the bot, find the swarm before you stand on it. It is slow and unglamorous and it is the only thing that works. Teams that rush a Killjoy site without clearing utility first lose players to objects rather than to players, which is the most annoying way to lose a round.

Who should pick her up

Players who like setting things up more than they like shooting. If you have ever enjoyed a game where the satisfaction comes from a trap working exactly as you designed it two minutes earlier, Killjoy is built for you.

Avoid her if you cannot resist repositioning. Her whole value is holding one area extremely well, and every step you take toward the action is a step toward her utility switching itself off.
