What official material tells us about this character so far.
China. Sage is one of the launch agents and one of the few whose abilities read as an extension of who she is rather than equipment she picked up. Her kit is healing, blocking and bringing people back, and none of it does damage.
She is written as the steady one, the member of the Protocol other agents are glad is there. That is a hard character to make interesting and Riot mostly solved it by making her mechanically indispensable rather than dramatically loud.
Sage is the game’s only true resurrection, and everything else about her is secondary to that fact.
Understand what a revive actually does in a round-based game. It does not just add a player. It refunds the enemy team’s work, it returns a weapon that was already bought, and it changes a four against five into a five against five at the exact moment the enemy team thought they had won. No kill in VALORANT swings a round that hard.
Sentinel. Her barrier orb places a wall that solidifies after a few seconds, sealing a route or creating height she can stand on. Her slow orb drops a lingering field that slows movement and makes noise when crossed. Her heal restores an ally over time, or herself at a reduced rate.
Her ultimate is a channel on a dead teammate that brings them back at full health.
The wall is more important than most players treat it as. It is not just a block. It is a timing tool that buys ten seconds on a retake, and it is one of the few ways to get elevation on a map where elevation is not offered.
Sage is slow in a way the rest of the roster is not. You are not looking for fights, you are removing options from the enemy team and putting your own team back together. When you play her well, rounds feel longer, which is exactly what your side wants and exactly what the attacking team does not.
Playing against her is frustrating in a specific way. You win a fight and then you have not won it, because the person you killed is standing back up. The answer is killing the Sage first, which every team knows and very few teams actually do.
Anyone who is new. She is the easiest agent in the game to be useful with, because a wall placed roughly in the right spot is still a wall, and a heal is a heal even if your positioning is poor. You will contribute in games where you lose every duel.
She is also the agent most often picked for the wrong reason. Sage is not a support in the sense of following your team around healing them. She is a sentinel, which means she holds a site alone while the rest of the map happens elsewhere. If you pick her expecting to be looked after, you have misread the role.
