After three Spider-Man games, Insomniac Games is taking on another Marvel icon with Marvel’s Wolverine, an action-adventure launching September 15, 2026 for PlayStation 5 at $79.99. A two-hour preview event revealed a younger, more emotionally complex take on Logan than expected, with actor Liam McIntyre voicing a Wolverine still learning to balance his lone-wolf nature with loyalty to his team.

What the preview showed

The demo began with a rescue mission led by Team X—a group of mutant vigilantes including Wolverine, the shapeshifter Mystique, and the super-strong Sabretooth. They’re working to save their leader Nathaniel Essex, who is being held by Bolivar Trask, a mutant hater seeking to exterminate the mutant race. The opening mission escalates into a boss fight against a prototype Sentinel, described as a straightforward encounter requiring players to dodge attacks and land claw strikes.

After this action sequence, the demo shifted to Madripoor, specifically to Tyger’s bar in the district’s Lowtown area, featuring Southeast Asian aesthetics. Here, the pacing slowed considerably. Wolverine engages in slice-of-life missions with Team X members: playing drinking games with Mystique, talking to Sabretooth (who wants to take over the team), and meeting a friend named Walter who requests a specific song—James Carr’s “The Dark End of the Street.” The demo also teased future content through environmental details, including an I.O.U. playing card left by Gambit. The preview ended when the Hand—ninjas from Spider-Man: Brand New Day—arrive and kidnap Walter during an interrupted moment between Wolverine and his telepathic love interest Jean Grey.

Why this matters

Wolverine has been a peripheral character in most of his video game appearances, making this dedicated focus significant for fans. The last major Wolverine-led game was 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which adapted the Hugh Jackman film. Insomniac’s approach here appears to diverge from the grizzled, antisocial archetype by exploring a younger Logan caught between isolation and connection—a character arc that resonates with established X-Men mythology.

McIntyre’s more intimate vocal performance initially seemed like a departure from the gravelly tone long associated with the character, but the preview suggests this younger interpretation works for the story Insomniac is telling. The emphasis on slice-of-life moments in a bar setting signals that the game intends to build emotional stakes through relationships and character dynamics, not just combat encounters. This mirrors Insomniac’s narrative approach in its Spider-Man games, where downtime sequences deepen player investment in the protagonist’s connections.

What’s next

With the game set to launch in September 2026, players will learn whether Insomniac can sustain this balance between action and character-driven storytelling across a full campaign. The appearance of characters like Gambit and the Hand suggests a broader web of Marvel connections waiting to be revealed.
