A fresh rumor has emerged suggesting that Disney is actively searching for a development partner to create a new installment in the Star Wars Battlefront series. According to a report by Polygon, the information originated from the Quarterman column in the revived print issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM). This publication was produced via a successful Kickstarter campaign that raised over $1.7 million in 2024, hitting a stretch goal to create a 265th issue of the long-defunct magazine.

During a recent episode of Giant Bomb’s Game Mess Mornings, reporter Jeff Grubb shared details from the EGM rumor column, noting that Lucasfilm is currently evaluating potential studios to handle a follow-up to the popular shooter series. The report identifies two studios allegedly being considered for the project: EA DICE, which developed the two most recent titles in the franchise, and Bungie, the developer behind Halo, Destiny, and Marathon. Grubb clarified that these discussions do not mean a game is currently in active production. He noted that while Disney appears to be looking for a partner to capitalize on the sustained popularity of Star Wars Battlefront 2, the search is still in the conversation stage.

EA DICE has extensive history with the franchise, having released the 2015 Star Wars Battlefront for PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One, which focused on the original trilogy era. Their 2017 sequel, Star Wars Battlefront 2, expanded the scope to include the Clone Wars and sequel trilogies. The series holds a deep history with fans, dating back to the LucasArts and Pandemic shooters released a decade prior. A third entry was famously in development at Free Radical Design before its ultimate cancellation, with only unauthorized builds surfacing over the years. Following the expiration of Electronic Arts’ exclusive license to make Star Wars games in 2023, the landscape for potential development has shifted.

While players wait for official news, they should note that both potential studios are currently occupied with other projects. EA DICE is supporting Battlefield 6, while Bungie is focused on Marathon and Destiny 2. For now, players can only watch for official announcements from Disney or Lucasfilm regarding the future of the series.

Why it matters

For the player base, this rumor signals that Disney may be looking to capitalize on the long-standing demand for a third entry in the series, which has been highly anticipated since the cancellation of the original Star Wars: Battlefront 3 project years ago. Whether either studio has the capacity to take on a project of this scale remains an open question. There is no confirmed information regarding regional availability, server infrastructure, or specific localization support for players at this time. Players should treat this as speculative industry news until an official announcement is made.
