Metro 2039 will break from the franchise’s tradition by introducing a fully voiced protagonist called The Stranger at the story’s center, a shift that executive producer Jon Bloch says was essential to telling a darker, more personal narrative.

How The Stranger Changes the Story

Unlike the core Metro trilogy—which follows silent protagonist Artyom across Metro 2033, Metro: Last Light, and Metro Exodus—Metro 2039’s new lead character speaks throughout the game. According to Bloch, this vocal performance lets players hear The Stranger’s thoughts and understand his perspective on unfolding events. The story itself focuses directly on this protagonist: his history, his struggles, and his singular motivation for his actions. Bloch emphasized that having a voiced character allows 4A Games to explore what’s “inside” The Stranger in ways a silent protagonist couldn’t achieve.

Creative director Andriy Shevchenko and Bloch noted that the game has taken a significantly darker turn overall. “The story is directly about our protagonist, The Stranger, about him, about his history, about the things he struggles with, about his singular motivation for what he’s doing,” Bloch told TechRadar Gaming. He added that sticking with the silent protagonist method would have prevented them from telling this particular story properly, framing the voice acting as integral to the narrative design rather than a cosmetic choice.

Why It Matters

The decision to use a voiced protagonist represents a fundamental departure from Metro’s established formula. The original trilogy built its atmosphere and player connection through Artyom’s silence, letting players project themselves onto the character while environmental storytelling carried much of the weight. By moving to a spoken narrative, 4A Games is signaling a shift toward character-driven storytelling where personality, motivation, and internal conflict take center stage.

This change also reflects the real-world circumstances shaping the game’s development. In the same interview, the studio addressed how the Russia-Ukraine war has influenced Metro 2039’s direction—a conflict that hits close to home for the Ukrainian team at 4A Games. A more personal, character-focused story may be better suited to exploring complex themes rooted in contemporary experience than the franchise’s previous approach.

The voiced protagonist also gives players a clearer emotional anchor, potentially deepening immersion through dialogue and character perspective rather than relying solely on external narrative framing.

What Comes Next

Metro 2039 is scheduled to release in February 2027 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC. As launch approaches, expect more details about The Stranger’s character, voice actor, and how his story unfolds across the game’s campaign.
