Playground Games has confirmed that the main quest in the upcoming Fable reboot will take around 20 hours to complete, marking a notable increase over the series’ previous entries. Associate game directors Will Kennedy and Craig Littler shared the estimated campaign length during a group Q&A at gamescom 2026, offering players a clearer picture of what to expect when the fantasy RPG launches.
Campaign Length and Overall Content
Kennedy broke down the content structure during the developer session: “We have around 15-20 hours of mainline quest gameplay, we have around 15-20 of side and open-world exploration content gameplay.” This means players looking to experience everything the world has to offer—not just the critical path—could expect roughly 30-40 hours of gameplay, excluding the “life systems” that Playground says have no hard endpoint.
When one attendee remarked that Fable might not be a “huge game,” Littler pushed back on that framing, clarifying that “you can literally play it forever if that’s what you want to do.” Kennedy reiterated this point, noting that the game’s “life systems are limitless, so you can play them for as long as you want.” These systems appear designed to give players long-term engagement beyond the narrative campaign.
How It Stacks Up
In the context of today’s RPG landscape, a 20-hour main quest sits comfortably in the middle ground. Open-world juggernauts like Elden Ring, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla have set expectations at 50+ hours for main stories alone, making Fable’s scope look conservative by comparison.
However, the new Fable appears poised to be the longest campaign in the franchise’s history. The original 2004 Fable clocked in at roughly 12.5 hours, Fable 2 at 13 hours, and Fable 3 at 13.5 hours. This new entry nearly doubles the runtime of the series’ debut, a substantial jump that aligns with modern player expectations while remaining true to Fable’s core design philosophy.
Completionists tackling the earlier games typically invested around 30 hours in the first Fable and 50 hours in both the second and third titles. The new reboot appears positioned to follow a similar completionist curve, though the exact breakdown won’t be clear until release.
Why It Matters
For longtime Fable fans, this campaign length likely comes as no surprise. The series has never been built around sprawling 100+ hour narratives; instead, it prioritized focused storytelling and player agency through its life systems—the choices and character interactions that give the world depth. This new Fable seems to be doubling down on that philosophy rather than chasing AAA open-world bloat. A 20-hour campaign leaves room for Playground to craft a tighter narrative while still delivering substantial content, especially when paired with side quests and emergent systems that don’t have artificial endpoints.
Fable launches February 23, 2027, on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. With the release window firming up, players will soon get their hands-on verdict about whether the game’s campaign and life systems deliver on the studio’s promises.
