Monster Hunter Wilds is set to receive a significant expansion titled Ascendance, which aims to address player concerns regarding the base game’s difficulty. Hands-on impressions from a Tokyo Game Show 2026 demo indicate that this expansion introduces Master Rank hunts, new monsters, and expanded weapon movesets designed to ramp up the challenge level for veteran players.

Boost Drivers and New Combat Mechanics

Central to the Ascendance expansion is the introduction of “Boost Drivers.” Hunters now have a Boost Gauge that fills during combat, allowing for up to three charges. When activated, Boost Drivers enhance weapon-specific actions and attacks. For example, Dual Blades gain ultra-rapid attacks, damage-dealing dodge maneuvers, and the series’ first offset attacks, which allow players to counter incoming damage. Other weapons, like the Sword and Shield, gain a new ranged grapple move similar to the Clutch Claw from Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, as well as the ability to coat blades with items for elemental damage or self-healing.

Challenging New Horizons

The expansion introduces new areas like the Eyrie in the Forbidden Lands, a vertical zone characterized by floating rock layers and complex root systems. Players will also encounter new monsters, such as the winged Alpha Arakata, and returning series staples like Teostra, which offer a significant spike in combat intensity compared to the base game’s endgame. The Seikret mount has also been updated with improved aerial navigation, including the ability to rapidly accelerate and gain height, aiding players in tracking targets across these new environments.

While the base game of Monster Hunter Wilds was praised for its open areas and visuals, some players felt it lacked the “aspirational push” associated with high-difficulty hunts. Based on recent previews, Ascendance appears to be positioning itself as a substantial, Iceborne-style expansion that brings much-needed depth to the end-game experience. The expansion is slated for a 2027 release.
