After a hiatus that has lasted since 2014, the legendary Castlevania series is finally making its long-awaited return. Evil Empire, the developer behind the hit title Dead Cells, has confirmed that the new entry, Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, is set to launch on October 15, 2026, across PlayStation 5, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
Bridging the Animated and Game Worlds
The game is positioned as a bridge between the classic game lore and the popular Netflix animated series. It stars Rose Belmont, the daughter of Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades—characters central to both the original 1989 game Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse and the animated adaptation. Players can expect appearances from familiar faces, as the development team has secured voice talent from the show, including Alejandra Reynoso returning as Sypha and Graham McTavish reprising his iconic role as Dracula.
Set in 1499 against the backdrop of a burning Paris, the story draws inspiration from both the original series and the follow-up show, Castlevania: Nocturne. While details on the full cast remain under wraps, the narrative is framed as a direct link that hands the mantle from Trevor to his daughter, Rose.
Modern Mechanics Meet Classic Roots
Rather than resting solely on nostalgia, Evil Empire is integrating modern sensibilities into the core Metroidvania formula. The game incorporates “soulslike” combat mechanics, offering a challenging experience that includes regenerating enemies and a diverse arsenal of weapons beyond the traditional Vampire Killer whip. For those concerned about the difficulty, the developers have included specific modifiers to help players adjust the challenge to their preference. Additionally, a new system of magical sub-weapons called Arcana will be available to broaden player playstyles.
This project originated from an ambitious pitch by Evil Empire, who approached Konami with a proposal for a Dead Cells collaboration. Konami series producer Tsutomi Taniguchi noted that the collaboration served as a “fantastic opportunity,” ultimately leading to the approval of a full-scale, standalone entry in the franchise.
Why it matters
For fans who have spent over a decade waiting for a new mainline entry, Belmont’s Curse represents the end of a long drought. By blending the established aesthetic of the Netflix series with modern gameplay innovations like soulslike combat and custom difficulty settings, the game aims to satisfy long-time veterans while providing a welcoming entry point for those who discovered the franchise through the animated shows. Players should keep an eye on how these new mechanics balance the classic “Castlevania” feel when the game releases this October.
