Jason Jones, the legendary co-founder of Bungie and a primary architect behind the Halo and Destiny franchises, has officially unveiled his new venture: a Los Angeles-based studio called Stone Kite. Rather than focusing strictly on game development, Stone Kite is positioning itself as a cross-medium entertainment house, with plans to build narrative worlds that span games, books, film, and television.
Breaking down the media silos
Stone Kite is led by CEO Margaret Stohl, a seasoned veteran of Bungie with an extensive background in gaming, Marvel Comics, and literature. According to Stohl, the studio’s core philosophy is to dismantle traditional industry workflows. Instead of creating a property in one medium and adapting it elsewhere later, Stone Kite intends to bring global creators from various disciplines into the development process from day one. By collaborating across creative mediums simultaneously, the team aims to build deeper, more enduring worlds for communities to explore.
For Jones, this transition represents a lifelong aspiration to shift from behind-the-scenes game design to professional writing. “I’ve spent my whole life making games, but I’ve always wanted to write,” Jones stated, noting that his partnership with Stohl was instrumental in developing his personal manuscript into a broader entertainment project.
A debut into comic books
The studio’s first project, One Zero One, is a four-part limited comic book series based on a manuscript written by Jones. The story centers on an impending conflict between humanity and a rogue army of AI-driven robots—a premise that echoes some of the sci-fi themes Jones famously explored during his time at Bungie. The first installment of the series is currently available in digital format via the official Stone Kite website, where fans can also secure preorders for physical editions.
Why it matters
For fans of Jones’ work, this announcement confirms his next chapter following his departure from Bungie earlier this year during Sony’s widespread corporate layoffs. While Jones is known for his guarded nature and rare public appearances, the launch of Stone Kite marks a significant shift in his creative output, moving away from singular console experiences toward a broader, multimedia storytelling approach.
Players should watch this space to see if the “world-building” philosophy promised by Stone Kite eventually leads to game development. With the current industry trend moving toward transmedia storytelling, Jones and Stohl’s attempt to develop games alongside comics and film from the ground up could influence how major franchises are handled in the future. For now, enthusiasts of his previous work in sci-fi gaming may find interest in the thematic roots established in his debut comic series.
