4A Games has officially confirmed a significant free update for both Metro 2033 Redux and Metro Last Light Redux. Designed to modernize the classic survival shooter experience for existing owners, these updates arrive on PC on October 22, 2026, with console versions following shortly after on October 29, 2026. This initiative by the developer and publisher Deep Silver aims to revitalize the original games, providing a definitive way to experience Artyom’s journey before the franchise narrative continues in the upcoming sequel.

According to publisher Deep Silver, this update is not a complete remake or remaster, but rather a performance-focused optimization pass intended to bring the titles up to modern technical standards. Players can expect a comprehensive suite of technical upgrades, including the implementation of 4K textures, enhanced animation fidelity, higher-quality audio, and increased environmental detail. Beyond visual fidelity, 4A Games has committed to integrating community-requested bug fixes and general quality-of-life improvements to smooth out the experience for both new players and veterans returning to the tunnels.

Technical Enhancements and Performance Targets

The technical overhaul brings significant changes to how the games function on modern hardware. On consoles, the update targets a native 4K resolution at 60 fps, with the option to reach upscaled 4K at 120 fps on compatible hardware. PlayStation 5 users will see deeper integration with console-specific features, including dedicated PSSR support for the PS5 Pro, alongside Adaptive Trigger functionality for the DualSense controller. Xbox Series X players will gain support for TSR upscaling and anti-aliasing, while eligible Xbox consoles will receive Spatial Audio support, further immersing players in the claustrophobic atmosphere of the Metro series.

Why it matters

This update serves as a visual and performance bridge for fans waiting for the franchise’s next chapter, Metro 2039, which is currently slated for release on February 4, 2027. Following the last glimpse of Metro 2039 at Gamescom 2026, fans have been eager for new content, and these enhancements provide the perfect reason to revisit the series. For players, this means the definitive versions of the original Metro games are becoming more accessible and technically robust on modern hardware at no extra cost to existing owners. If you have been holding off on a replay of the series, this patch makes these titles a much more viable play before the story continues in 2027. Keep an eye on your platform update queues as the October release dates approach to ensure you have the latest performance tweaks installed before diving back into the underground.
