Gears of War: E-Day has officially arrived for early access players, but those jumping into the latest entry in the franchise might notice that some staple features are missing at launch. Developer The Coalition addressed the situation in a recent blog post, citing the decision to build the game’s engine and sandbox from the ground up as the primary reason for the omissions.
Building from the ground up
According to the developers, the decision to start with an “empty hard drive” was made to ensure a unified gameplay experience across the game’s campaign, PVE, and PVP modes. While this approach allowed for technical innovations in movement, cover systems, and combat, it came with a significant trade-off: the team could not include every legacy feature from previous titles in time for the release. Players will find that staples like Meat Shields, Chainsaw Duels, and certain legacy weapons are currently absent from the game. Furthermore, online essentials such as private lobbies and leaderboards are also missing for the time being.
Looking toward the post-launch roadmap
While the current state of the game has left some long-time fans frustrated, The Coalition has emphasized that these features are not permanently discarded. The studio is currently focused on maintaining a stable launch experience while evaluating how to reintroduce or improve these fan-favorite mechanics through future updates.
Players looking for a more complete multiplayer experience shouldn’t have to wait too long for at least some additions. Versus Ranked mode is scheduled to unlock on October 13. Following that, the game will transition through a series of seasonal updates. Season 1, which runs through December 1, will feature limited-time events including Halloween and a 20-year franchise celebration. The studio has already mapped out a roadmap reaching through Season 5, titled “Devotion,” signaling a long-term commitment to evolving the game’s sandbox.
Why it matters
For the Gears community, this launch represents a challenging transition. The absence of private lobbies and ranked play at day one is a major hurdle for a series that has historically relied on these features to sustain its competitive multiplayer scene. With seven years having passed since the release of Gears 5, expectations for a polished, feature-complete experience were high.
Players should keep a close eye on the upcoming seasonal patches. While the game features significant visual and mechanical overhauls, its long-term success will likely depend on how quickly The Coalition can restore the “legacy” feel that series veterans expect. For now, the game acts as a “live-service” project, meaning that while it may feel sparse today, the feature set is expected to grow incrementally as the seasons progress.
