PlayStation is finally bringing AI-driven visual upgrades to the base PS5 console, bridging the gap between standard hardware and the PS5 Pro. Sony announced today the launch of Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a new performance-optimized tier of its proprietary upscaling technology developed through Project Amethyst, a collaboration with AMD.
The QSSR Difference
Unlike the more demanding PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) found on the PS5 Pro, QSSR was designed specifically to run on original PS5 hardware. According to the announcement, the new library uses a streamlined neural network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation to maximize performance. The result is a system that enhances pixel-level clarity and image stability without requiring the specialized hardware architecture found in the Pro model.
First Games to Get the Upgrade
Players won’t have to wait long to test the new tech. Sony confirmed that Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are the first titles to receive QSSR support. Both games are being patched today, allowing users to toggle the feature as an additional graphics option. Representatives from both Insomniac Games and Sucker Punch Productions praised the update, with developers noting that the tech brings a noticeable increase in detail to busy environments and character models, providing a closer experience to the PSSR-enhanced visuals seen on the Pro console.
Why it matters
For those of us still rocking a base PS5, this is a massive win. One of the biggest selling points for the Pro model has been PSSR, and it’s great to see Sony didn’t leave standard console owners behind. By bringing a version of this AI upscaling to the original hardware, Sony is effectively extending the visual lifespan of the base PS5, offering better image stability and detail in major titles without forcing an expensive upgrade.
Sony has confirmed that QSSR will be available to all PlayStation developers, so expect to see this feature rolled out in future software updates for other games. Keep an eye on your game settings menus after updating your titles, as developers will likely implement QSSR as a toggleable graphics option.
