If you are already clearing off your internal storage for the upcoming The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake, you might be surprised by how much space it actually takes up. According to reporting from GamesRadar+, the highly anticipated title is set to clock in at 27GB. This information comes via a download card spotted in Japanese retail stores by Twitter user Genki_JPN. While the card offers a glimpse of the game through included screenshots and artwork, the most significant revelation is the file size requirement for the Switch 2 release.
While 27GB is a manageable figure in an era where modern AAA titles frequently balloon past the 100GB mark, it represents a massive jump from the original 1998 release. The classic Nintendo 64 version shipped on a 32MB cartridge, making this new remake over 800 times larger in file size. Players preparing for the 2026 launch can take some comfort in knowing that despite this growth, the game is still significantly smaller than other modern heavyweights on the platform, such as Final Fantasy 7 Remake at 90.4GB and Rebirth at 91.5GB.
Comparing the Zelda Library
Despite the jump in size compared to its 90s predecessor, the Ocarina of Time remake remains relatively lean compared to other modern titles. However, it does set a new internal benchmark for the franchise. At 27GB, it surpasses both the Switch 2 editions of Breath of the Wild, which previously held the record at 24GB, and Tears of the Kingdom, which sits at 20GB. This makes the Ocarina of Time remake the largest mainline Zelda title of the current Switch era. In contrast, smaller titles like the Link’s Awakening remake and Echoes of Wisdom both land within the 5GB range. The only Zelda-related title currently larger than the new remake is Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, which sits at 43.5GB.
As the remake is set to introduce one of the most immersive features from Breath of the Wild, players should anticipate a more detailed experience that necessitates this increased storage requirement. To prepare for the launch, players should assess their available internal drive capacity to ensure they are ready for the 2026 release date.
Why it matters
For players, the primary takeaway is a mix of relief and realization. While 27GB is significantly smaller than the massive downloads required for many other modern games, it nonetheless establishes a new, larger footprint for mainline Zelda adventures. If you are a collector or a player with limited storage, this confirms you will need to set aside slightly more space for this remake than you did for the sprawling open worlds of Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom. With the title now officially trending as the largest mainline Zelda game in the Switch era, it is worth keeping an eye on your available drive capacity before the 2026 launch.
