Dual-Type Cards and Special Packs Arrive in Pokémon TCG Pocket’s Dual Fusion Expansion
The Pokémon Company has announced a major update for Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) Pocket, set to launch alongside the new 'Dual Fusion' expansion on October 29.

The Pokémon Company has announced a major update for Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) Pocket, set to launch alongside the new ‘Dual Fusion’ expansion on October 29. As reported by My Nintendo News, this release introduces the game’s first dual-type cards, marking a significant shift for deck-building strategies.
Introducing Dual-Type Cards
Players will soon be able to utilize cards that feature two distinct types, adding a new layer of complexity to competitive play. The announcement highlighted two primary examples: Mega Mewtwo X ex, which functions as both a Psychic and Fighting-type, and Mega Greninja ex, which covers both Water and Dark types. In addition to these mechanical additions, the expansion will feature new illustrations for iconic favorites, including Pikachu, Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise.
Special Packs and Limited-Time Events
Beyond the new expansion, the game is introducing ‘Special Packs’—a new format distinct from standard booster packs. According to My Nintendo News, these packs require a specific type of stamina that replenishes once per week and are guaranteed to contain at least one star-rarity card. The first iteration, titled ‘Special Pack: First Partners,’ runs from October 31 through December 26 and focuses on partner Pokémon from all nine regions.
To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Pokémon TCG, an extensive event window is running from October 20, 2026, to October 20, 2027. Players who log in for 10 days during this window will receive a special immersive Pikachu ex card. The anniversary celebration also includes ‘Pika Pika! Pikachu Packs’ and themed mission events.
Why it matters
The addition of dual-type cards fundamentally changes how players approach team composition, potentially allowing for more versatile decks that can exploit multiple weaknesses. With the game approaching its second anniversary, these updates are clearly aimed at shaking up the meta while providing long-term goals through the year-long anniversary mission series.
Players should keep an eye on their stamina management, as the new Special Packs rely on a weekly recharge cycle. With events ranging from theme-specific promo cards to anniversary-exclusive rewards, trainers have a steady stream of content to look forward to leading into the holiday season.
