Bungie is gearing up to reveal more details regarding its plans to restore removed Destiny 2 content, with the developer expected to share a progress update by the end of October. Following a surprise announcement last month that the studio intends to bring back campaigns and other additions previously removed from the game, players have been waiting for specifics on how the process will function.
According to Eurogamer, Bungie’s head of product, Josh Deane, addressed the community via a post on X. Deane acknowledged the ambiguity surrounding the “how, what, and when” of the unvaulting process, noting that it will be an intentional effort that requires time. He clarified that the upcoming update will not be a traditional roadmap but rather a “progress bar” designed to show the community the studio’s development milestones.
How the unvaulting will work
Deane explained that this approach is intended to provide transparency regarding development challenges and demonstrate “proof of work.” The goal is to ensure that when a release date is eventually shared, both the developers and the player base share the same expectations for the game’s future.
While Bungie has yet to release the full plan, a Forbes report cited by Eurogamer suggests that the unvaulting effort will focus on campaigns, raids, and destinations. Crucially, the report clarifies that expired live seasons are not part of the return plan, and this shift in direction does not mean the game has returned to active development. Bungie previously announced the end of active development for the shooter-MMO in June.
Why it matters
For players who felt the impact of Bungie’s “Content Vault” over the years, this news signals a tangible step toward regaining access to legacy experiences. Since this project is being framed as a celebration of Destiny’s history rather than a return to a live-service development cadence, players should temper expectations regarding new, ongoing seasonal content updates.
With the update coming at the end of October, the community will get more clarity on what the first step of the process will look like. Players should keep an eye on official Bungie channels for this “progress bar” update, as it will establish the timeline and scope for what is coming back to the game.
