A 29-year-old Alabama resident was arrested by the FBI after allegedly making violent threats during a game of Fortnite. The player, identified as Edward Lee Frith, reportedly made remarks about shooting federal agents, an incident that prompted a swift intervention from Epic Games.

The Investigation and Arrest

According to a federal affidavit, the investigation began after Epic Games conducted a voluntary emergency disclosure to the FBI on September 20. The studio provided account information associated with the player ‘WagesOfNinja,’ along with voice recordings capturing the threats. Investigators successfully linked the account to Frith by tracing more than 1,700 logins from IP addresses geolocated in Alabama.

During the recorded audio, Frith allegedly stated, “Let’s see if the FBI is going to show up at my door because I’ll shoot them motherf**kers too.” The affidavit further notes that the player expressed intentions regarding murdering others and potentially killing police officers and himself. Following the review of these recordings, the FBI arrested Frith on September 23, just three days after the initial report from the studio. He has since been indicted on an interstate threatening communications charge and entered a not guilty plea.

How Voice Reporting Works

While the source of the initial recording wasn’t detailed, Fortnite utilizes a voice reporting system that records the last five minutes of chat on a user’s device when a player submits a report. Epic Games maintains that they cannot access this audio data unless the system is active and a report is submitted by a participant, at which point the files are sent to Epic’s moderators for review.

Why it matters

This incident highlights the real-world consequences of toxic behavior and threats made within digital gaming spaces. It serves as a stark reminder that gaming platforms are increasingly willing and able to cooperate with federal law enforcement when credible threats of violence are detected. For the player base, it underscores that voice chat is not a private or lawless environment.

Players should be aware that reporting features are actively monitored and that extreme rhetoric can escalate quickly from a moderation issue to a legal one. As of now, Frith remains in a corrections facility pending trial, which is scheduled for December.
