Night City is heading to the big screen. A new report from Deadline confirms that Paramount Pictures is officially developing a live-action film adaptation set within the expansive universe of Cyberpunk 2077. While the project is currently in the very early stages of development—potentially even before pre-production—it signals a major expansion for CD Projekt Red’s gritty sci-fi franchise outside of gaming.
The Team Behind the Lens
The project is set to be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura. Players might recognize his name from his extensive work on the Transformers film franchise. His production history also includes titles like Snake Eyes and Madame Web. The choice of di Bonaventura suggests Paramount is looking to lean into high-octane, large-scale action, which fits the aesthetic of Cyberpunk 2077, though no writer or director has been attached to the project at this time.
A Growing Cyberpunk Ecosystem
This movie marks another significant milestone for the franchise. Since the launch of Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red has steadily grown the IP through comics, novels, and the critically acclaimed Netflix anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which is currently slated to receive a sequel.
Paramount is no stranger to game adaptations. The studio is currently working on a live-action movie based on the Call of Duty series, with director Peter Berg attached to the project, and is co-producing the upcoming Street Fighter feature film. With Night City being such a densely packed setting—ranging from the main narrative featuring V and Johnny Silverhand to the espionage-heavy themes of the Phantom Liberty expansion—the studio has a massive amount of lore and character arcs to draw from for a feature-length adaptation.
Why it matters
For fans, this announcement is a double-edged sword. It confirms that the Cyberpunk brand is officially moving beyond interactive media, bringing its unique blend of transhumanism and corporate dystopia to a wider cinematic audience. However, given that the film is in early development, it is likely that we won’t see a release date or casting details for quite some time.
Players should manage expectations while the film finds its creative footing. With recent successful transitions from games to film and television, there is a precedent for high-quality adaptations, but we will have to wait to see if the movie captures the specific, neon-soaked aesthetic of the source material or if it chooses to forge its own path within the established lore.
