Sony has officially announced a new Midnight Black version of the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, expanding its hardware offerings with a sleek, darker aesthetic. While the console is highly anticipated, it is currently limited exclusively to the Japanese market. As reported by Video Games Chronicle, the new hardware variant is scheduled for an official release on November 19. Alongside the console, Sony will also launch a matching Midnight Black disc drive, allowing users to attach it to their digital units for expanded media capabilities.

This Midnight Black release is a direct continuation of the special Japan-only product line first introduced in November 2025. This initiative was designed to bolster Sony’s footprint in the region, where the Nintendo Switch has historically dominated the gaming landscape in recent years. By introducing this exclusive variant, the company is attempting to revitalize the Japanese gaming community through a more accessible entry point into the PlayStation ecosystem.

The console is priced at ¥55,000, which is approximately $350. This represents a significant discount compared to the standard multi-language Digital Edition models. However, this lower price point comes with strict functional requirements. The system is heavily region-locked, necessitating that users have a PlayStation account registered specifically to Japan. Furthermore, the system software must be configured to use the Japanese language.

SIE president and CEO Hideaki Nishino previously spoke to Famitsu regarding the necessity of this regional strategy. Nishino noted that previous models were often caught up in global market fluctuations, with units being exported from Japan to overseas buyers due to favorable exchange rates. By implementing these strict regional locks and account requirements, Sony aims to ensure that its subsidized hardware reaches the intended local consumer base rather than being diverted to international resellers. Nishino emphasized that while the term countermeasure might be strong, the company felt it was crucial to deliver the console properly to Japanese customers at a unique, affordable price.

Why it matters

For players residing outside of Japan, the most important takeaway is that there is currently no confirmation of a Western release for this specific Midnight Black hardware. Due to the strict account and language restrictions, importing this console from Japan is not a practical solution for international players looking to save money. If you are simply looking for the aesthetic, Sony continues to offer the Midnight Black Console Cover for $54 or £45 in global markets. While this does not offer the subsidized entry price of the Japan-exclusive unit, attaching these official covers to an existing PlayStation 5 console provides the same visual finish for those who prefer the darker look.
