The chaotic streets of Night City are returning to our screens. As revealed during IGN’s Fall Fan Fest, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners will officially return for its second season on Netflix starting October 20. Moving on from the story of David Martinez and Lucy, the new season shifts focus to an entirely different cast of characters, introducing Roman Carax—a child with a deep-seated love for old-fashioned cinema—and Talia Yang, a member of the cyberware-enhanced criminal gang Maelstrom.
Behind the Creative Shift
In an interview with IGN, CD Projekt Red’s VP of Franchise Bartosz Sztybor and Executive Producer Saya Elder discussed the challenges of following up on the massive success of the first season. Sztybor noted that the creative team aimed to avoid simply retreading the path of David and Lucy, opting instead to maintain the core principles of the Edgerunners franchise while exploring fresh themes.
According to Elder, the inclusion of a child protagonist was a point of significant internal debate. Roman’s motivation stems from his desire to document stories through his camera, a pursuit that frequently places him in extreme danger. This narrative choice serves as a “love letter to cinema” from the creators, touching on themes of generational storytelling and the loss of physical media in a world dominated by braindances.
A Darker, Grittier Vision
Fans can expect a significant shift in tone regarding the show’s depiction of violence. Sztybor, who cites influences from the “New French Extremity” horror wave and directors like David Cronenberg, confirmed that the second season leans heavily into visceral, uncomfortable imagery. The team worked closely with studio TRIGGER to amplify the violence, aiming for a more realistic and sometimes cold, unemotional delivery compared to the first season.
“For real, in Edgerunners 2, you have never seen violence shown in such a way in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe,” Sztybor stated. Elder added that the studio specifically focused on making the animation of trauma and physical discomfort—such as the way sweat is depicted—feel uniquely “unpleasant to look at.”
Why it matters
For players and fans of the franchise, the return of Edgerunners signals a commitment from CD Projekt Red to expand the Cyberpunk IP beyond just game patches and expansions. By introducing new characters and exploring different corners of the Night City underworld, the series seeks to prove that the world itself—rather than just one set of protagonists—is the draw.
Viewers should prepare for a tonal shift that prioritizes a more grounded, visceral form of horror. As the series moves away from the specific emotional arcs of the first season, it invites the audience to view Night City through a lens that is perhaps more cynical and unsettling. Keep an eye on how the show’s new aesthetic choices influence future Cyberpunk 2077 lore or thematic direction.
