Hideo Kojima is returning to the espionage genre with his upcoming title, Physint, but players expecting a successor to Metal Gear Solid should prepare for a different experience. According to reporting from Game Rant, Kojima explicitly stated on his KOJI10 podcast that while Physint involves spies, he intends to introduce new ideas and a form of action distinct from his previous work.

Physint, currently in development at Kojima Productions with Sony Interactive Entertainment, features actors Don Lee, Bill Skarsgard, and Charlee Fraser. While firm release details remain sparse, the game is being positioned as a new “action espionage” project, with marketing materials teasing themes of emotion and physical sensation.

Why it matters

For fans of the stealth-action genre, the development of Physint signals a potential competitive shift. As Kojima builds a new identity for his spy-focused IP, the Metal Gear Solid franchise—now managed by Konami—faces an identity crisis. With no new original mainline Metal Gear titles officially announced, the industry is left to wonder how Konami will evolve the series without its creator.

Konami currently relies on remakes, such as the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, to maintain interest. However, as Kojima enters the market with a new espionage title, Konami may feel increased pressure to deliver an original entry that justifies the series’ legacy. Whether the publisher attempts to mimic the “classic” Metal Gear formula or tries to innovate in a way that avoids direct comparison to Kojima’s new, experimental work remains the core question for the franchise’s long-term survival.

Defining a post-Kojima identity

As noted by Game Rant, there is a risk that attempting to replicate the specific creative touch of the original Metal Gear series could lead to a derivative product. Past attempts like Metal Gear Survive suggest that the fanbase is highly sensitive to changes in creative direction. If Konami aims to compete with Physint, the challenge will be to establish a fresh path for Metal Gear rather than simply reverse-engineering the mechanics of past hits. For the player, this means the coming years will likely define whether Metal Gear remains a forward-thinking standard-bearer for stealth games or settles into a role as a heritage franchise focused primarily on remakes.
