The next entry in the Cyberpunk series is already shifting its identity, according to Game Director Gabe Amatangelo. In a recent blog post on the CD Projekt Red website, and as reported by GamesRadar+, Amatangelo revealed that while he began with a specific concept for the title, the project has morphed as he empowered his team to contribute their own perspectives.

A Collaborative Creative Process

Amatangelo emphasized that he prefers to avoid acting as a bottleneck for development. Instead of signing off on every minute decision, he is fostering an environment where team members can influence the direction of the game. “I had the idea of Cyberpunk 2 in the beginning, but it evolves as I involve more people,” Amatangelo stated. He noted that the game is becoming a reflection of the “team’s hearts and souls” rather than just his own initial pitch. This collaborative spirit extends to how the studio defines the cyberpunk genre itself, with Amatangelo encouraging debate among the staff to help shape the game’s core themes of questioning authority and exploring the extremes of dehumanization.

Development Progress

While the studio has not provided a release window for the sequel, the project appears to be gaining momentum. CD Projekt Red currently has more than 180 developers dedicated to the title. The team’s current focus remains split, as the studio is also working on the next Witcher game and a new internal project, Project Hadar. Amatangelo expressed confidence in the team’s ability to navigate the complexities of the genre, stating that he is looking forward to sharing the final results of this collective effort with players.

Why it matters

For players, this shift in development philosophy suggests that the sequel may explore different thematic ground than its predecessor. By embracing the diverse interpretations of what “punk” means to various team members, the game could offer a broader, more nuanced take on the dystopian world established in Cyberpunk 2077.

Given the well-documented technical challenges during the 2077 launch, the current approach—which focuses on empowering the team and presumably taking the time necessary for development—is a critical development to watch. Players waiting for the next chapter should expect a game that leans heavily into the genre’s tradition of asking difficult questions, though it remains to be seen how those creative choices will manifest in the final gameplay experience.
