Hands-on previews of Marvel’s Wolverine for PS5 went live on August 13, and the early coverage confirmed Insomniac Games is not just reskinning its Spider-Man formula. The centerpiece is a combat system built around a three-tier Rage meter that rewards staying aggressive and close to enemies, which fits a character who thrives in the thick of a fight. The game launched on September 15, 2026 exclusively on PlayStation 5.

How the Rage meter works

Rage builds as Logan lands combos with his claws, kicks and critical strikes, so the fastest way to power up is to keep attacking rather than hang back. The meter has three tiers. At Tier 1, Logan is a fast, aggressive brawler with strong combo damage. At Tier 2, his combos hit harder and he unlocks Last Stand, which lets him burn rage to heal and get back up if he is fully downed, instead of sending the player back to a checkpoint.

At Tier 3, attacks are significantly stronger and brutal critical strikes become available. Those strikes open special takedowns, such as turning an enemy’s own weapon against them or improvising with objects in the environment. Insomniac also changes the presentation as rage climbs: Logan’s vision narrows and his breathing becomes louder and more primal.

Other combat systems

Beyond rage, Logan has a parry, a dodge and two attack buttons. Special techniques can be mapped to the controller, including Tornado Spin for cutting through groups and Knee Breaker for interrupting attacks. Adaptations are long-term upgrades that affect health and the Rage meter, and Enhanced Senses let Logan track enemies and set up stealthy takedowns.

Some encounters remove his advantages. Ability Inhibitors block mutant powers until destroyed, forcing players to rely on basic moves. Enemies include Reavers and members of the Hand armed with katanas and bows, and previews showed boss fights including Omega Red and a Sentinel Prototype that rewards patience.

Difficulty and options

Marvel’s Wolverine launched with 35 accessibility options, a toggle to reduce blood and dismemberment, and New Game Plus with exclusive adaptations that can make the game harder or make Logan more powerful. The optional Nightmare Doors trials add further challenge.

Inverting Spider-Man’s logic

Insomniac’s Spider-Man games rewarded evasion and positioning. Wolverine pushes the other way: it keeps the parry and dodge, but its core loop encourages players to stay close and keep attacking. For players tired of pure dodge-and-counter rhythm, that shift is the main reason the game feels distinct.

Why it matters

The Rage meter is the clearest sign that Wolverine is its own game rather than Spider-Man with claws. Knowing that rage comes from landing combos, not from soaking up hits, changes how players should approach every fight.

For players new to the game, the practical tip is simple: stay aggressive to reach Tier 2 early, because Last Stand is your safety net.
