In an effort to rebuild trust following the reception of last year’s release, Sega and Sports Interactive have announced that Football Manager 27 will be free to play for a limited time shortly after launch. According to reporting from VGC, the “Launch Preview” will be available across PC and Mac platforms from October 29 through November 3.
A new approach after a rocky year
This free-to-play window will be accessible via Steam, the Epic Games Store, the Microsoft Store, as well as Xbox and PC Game Pass, with no registration required. The studio claims that offering an annual title for free with all game modes accessible is an industry first. This follows a difficult period for the franchise; after a hiatus in 2024, the series returned with a Unity-powered engine that was widely criticized by the community for bugs and stripped-back features, leading to a “mostly negative” rating on Steam.
What is included in the preview
The developer has confirmed that players who choose to purchase the full version of the game during this window will receive a 10% discount. Furthermore, any progress made during the five-day free trial will carry over into the full release, and early purchasers will maintain access to the game until its official launch on November 10.
Football Manager 27 includes several updates to the formula, such as new Tactical Tweaks, improved Tactical Effectiveness, and Continue Flow customization. Players can also expect enhanced Match Day visuals and the return of various features that were previously missing.
Why it matters
For players, this move represents a significant opportunity to stress-test the latest entry in the franchise without committing to an upfront purchase. Given the community’s vocal dissatisfaction with the previous title—which Sports Interactive acknowledged had “missed expectations”—this preview acts as a low-risk way for veterans of the series to see if the promised interface improvements and feature rollbacks meet their standards.
If you were burnt by the 2026 release, this window provides the chance to verify if the technical issues have been addressed before buying in. As progress carries over to the full launch, it is effectively a way to start your season early at a discounted price if you decide the game feels right.
