Capcom has dropped a hint that the long-running Resident Evil franchise is heading toward a final chapter. In a recent interview with Yahoo Japan, as reported by IGN, executive producer Jun Takeuchi suggested that the series’ overarching story will likely reach a conclusion within the next ten years.

The 10-Year Strategy

Takeuchi explained that the narrative structure of the franchise has evolved organically over time rather than being mapped out from the start. During the development of the Resident Evil 2 remake, the team implemented a “10-year branding concept” to better align the series’ direction. According to Takeuchi, the release of Resident Evil Requiem earlier this year marked the completion of that first decade, setting the stage for a final narrative conclusion over the next ten years.

While the prospect of the saga ending might sound final, Takeuchi confirmed that Capcom intends to release multiple Resident Evil titles during this period. He refrained from providing specific details on upcoming projects, noting that he did not want to spoil the experience for fans.

A Franchise Powerhouse

The Resident Evil series continues to be a massive financial pillar for Capcom. Data from the first half of the 2027 fiscal year shows that half of Capcom’s top ten best-selling titles originated from the Resident Evil franchise, including Resident Evil 2 Remake, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 3, and Requiem. Notably, Requiem has already generated over $500 million in revenue.

Fans have plenty to keep them busy in the near term, with the Code Veronica remake slated for release early next year and ongoing rumors of story-mode DLC for Requiem. Additionally, the recent Resident Evil film directed by Zach Cregger has seen commercial success, further cementing the brand’s reach beyond gaming.

Why it matters

For players, this news signifies that Capcom has a clear long-term roadmap for the series’ lore. If you have been following the interconnected stories of Leon, Jill, and the rest of the roster, you can expect the narrative threads to tighten toward a specific finale over the next decade.

While this doesn’t mean the end of the Resident Evil brand as a whole, it does suggest that the core conflict fans have been following for years is approaching its climax. Players should watch for upcoming releases, as each new game will likely play a role in fulfilling this ten-year conclusion strategy.
