The National Toy Hall of Fame has officially recognized one of the most significant trading card games in history, inducting Pokémon cards into its prestigious lineup. As reported by IGN, the announcement was made on the morning of Thursday, November 5, coinciding with the franchise’s 30th-anniversary celebrations. Pokémon shares this year’s induction honors with Bingo, Care Bears, and the classic slide, ultimately outpacing other nominees such as Bop It!, mahjong, and Polly Pocket.

The criteria for induction

To be considered for the National Toy Hall of Fame, a nominee must be evaluated by a panel of historians, educators, and museum curators. The selection process is based on four pillars: innovation, discovery, longevity, and icon status. According to curator Mirek Stolee, the Pokémon TCG’s induction was driven by its “widespread appeal and global presence,” noting how it successfully took established card game formulas and made them more accessible through the inclusion of iconic Pokémon creatures.

The Hall of Fame, which is located at The Strong Museum of Play in Rochester, New York, has maintained a diverse collection since its founding in 1998, previously honoring items ranging from LEGO sets to the concept of ‘sand.’ Pokémon now joins other tabletop icons like Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering in the Hall of Fame.

A massive footprint

Data highlighted by The Strong Museum emphasizes the immense scale of the franchise. As of March 2026, over 85 billion cards have been distributed worldwide, with the game available in 13 different languages and a total market valuation estimated to exceed $15 billion. The museum’s dedicated exhibit on the game also acknowledges its role as an entry point into the hobby for millions of players and its transition from a physical tabletop game into both dedicated apps and Game Boy software.

Why it matters

For the average fan, this induction serves as a formal acknowledgment of the game’s cultural legacy. However, it also highlights a tension in the community: while the museum praises the TCG for its “accessibility,” the hobby has struggled for years with scalping and intense financial speculation, which has made it difficult for casual players to find cards at fair prices.

While The Pokémon Company has attempted to mitigate these issues through increased production, fans should keep an eye on The Strong Museum’s upcoming schedule. The institution is expected to debut new exhibits and events related to the induction in the new year, which may offer a closer look at the history of the cards that have shaped the TCG landscape for three decades.
