The world of Final Fantasy might be heading to the small screen, at least if veteran producer Yoshinori Kitase has his way. As reported by GamesRadar+, the Final Fantasy 7 director recently expressed interest in seeing the franchise expanded into a television series.

Speaking with IGN, Kitase discussed the potential for further expansion of the series’ lore. “Given the fact that we created this game, the remake of Final Fantasy 7, which explored the world of Final Fantasy 7 way more than the original version, I think that it would be nice to have in the future games or TV series inspired by the story of Final Fantasy,” Kitase stated. He added that he does not see any reason why such a project could not become a reality in the future.

A History of Multimedia Experiments

While a live-action or animated series would be a significant step, the Final Fantasy brand is no stranger to multimedia. The franchise has previously ventured into film with 2001’s CGI feature Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within and the narrative follow-up Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children. Additionally, Final Fantasy 15 saw a significant multimedia push, including an anime prequel and the feature film Kingsglaive, which featured high-profile voice talent such as Sean Bean and Aaron Paul.

Strategic Shifts at Square Enix

These comments arrive alongside updates regarding the developer’s broader future strategy. According to the GamesRadar+ report, Kitase indicated that Square Enix is prioritizing original titles over remakes moving forward. This shift in focus may impact long-standing fan speculation regarding other potential remakes, such as a modernized version of Final Fantasy 9. Meanwhile, the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy is currently scheduled to conclude in 2027 with the release of the final chapter, Revelation.

Why it matters

For players, this news represents a potential shift in how Square Enix manages its most iconic intellectual properties. While there is no concrete production announcement, the producer’s openness suggests that the company is actively considering how to extend its narrative universes beyond the console.

Fans should watch for further announcements regarding official Square Enix partnerships in the media space. As the studio pivots toward new original titles following the conclusion of the Final Fantasy 7 trilogy in 2027, the focus on expansive storytelling could indicate that the company is looking for ways to keep the franchise’s world-building in the public eye through streaming or broadcast mediums.
