With the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 just two weeks away, excitement is reaching a fever pitch as pre-orders have climbed to nearly eight million units. According to recent data from Sensor Tower, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz, the game has reached 7.71 million pre-ordered units, resulting in approximately $751 million in gross revenue.
Platform Preference and Spending Trends
Player preference heavily leans toward Sony’s current console, with the PlayStation 5 edition accounting for 74% of all pre-orders, generating $559 million. The Xbox Series X|S version represents the remaining 26% of pre-orders, totaling $192 million.
Financial data also highlights a clear trend in player purchasing habits. Sensor Tower’s August reporting indicated that a vast majority of fans are opting for higher-priced editions: 89% of pre-orders are for the $100 Ultimate Edition, while only 11% have opted for the $80 Standard Edition.
Projections and Market Impact
Karl Kontus, SVP and GM of Video Game Insights at Sensor Tower, shared some perspective on these figures with GamesIndustry.biz, suggesting that while standard trajectories might imply higher numbers, a realistic estimate for launch sits around 25 million units. Kontus noted that such a figure would generate roughly $2 billion in sales, effectively covering the game’s development and marketing costs before it even hits the hands of players.
Comparison data further underscores the massive scale of the launch. Sensor Tower analysis revealed that GTA 6 pre-orders are currently 148% ahead of where Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 stood at a similar point before its 2022 release.
Why it matters
The immense volume of pre-orders suggests a massive day-one player base, which will be the ultimate test for server infrastructure and launch stability. With the high adoption of the $100 Ultimate Edition, it is clear that fans are heavily invested in the premium experience, setting a new benchmark for publisher revenue expectations.
For players, the rapid momentum confirms that GTA 6 is on track to be one of the most significant releases in industry history. With analysts projecting lifetime sales ranging from 25 million to over 50 million units, the community should prepare for high activity levels across all platforms during the launch window.
