Wolverine Will Be Fully Playable Offline on Disc, Insomniac Confirms
Insomniac confirmed Marvel's Wolverine is fully playable offline from the disc, though it still recommends the day-one patch; the game launched September 15.

Marvel’s Wolverine arrived with a promise that is becoming rarer in modern gaming: full offline playability straight from the disc. Insomniac Games confirmed in mid-August that the PlayStation 5 exclusive would be a complete experience on disc, playable without an internet connection. The game launched on September 15, 2026.
What Insomniac confirmed
Project director Jess Reiner-Reed said “the game will be fully playable on the disc when you purchase it.” That means buying the disc is enough to play the whole campaign without going online first.
Insomniac still encourages players to download the day-one patch. Head of technology Mike Fitzgerald explained that the team keeps polishing and fixing bugs right up to release, and that the patch gives developers “that little bit of extra time” to improve the game. The studio has not stated the size of that patch. It has continued to update the game since launch; one September update added a toggle for the scent-trail feature, for example.
Marvel’s Wolverine is available as a physical disc for PS5 and digitally on the PlayStation Store. The Standard Edition costs $69.99, while the $79.99 Digital Deluxe Edition is digital only.
The broader context
The confirmation came as PlayStation faced criticism over its plan to end physical disc production for new games in January 2028, a move that has sparked debate about digital ownership, game preservation and what owning a game really means in 2026. Games released before that date can still come out on disc, and existing discs remain playable.
Insomniac’s stance reads as a direct answer to those concerns. For collectors, preservation advocates and players with slow or unreliable internet, a disc that contains the whole game is worth far more than a box with a download code, which is how some other major releases, including GTA 6, are shipping.
Offline gaming, with a small asterisk
This is a clear commitment: buy the disc, play the game, no connection needed. For a AAA release in an era where even single-player games often ship with required patches, it is noteworthy. The small asterisk is that the best-performing version of the game still comes through updates, so players who can connect should do so.
Why it matters
With PlayStation’s disc deadline under two years away, Wolverine may be one of the last big first-party PlayStation games to ship as a complete, offline-playable disc. That matters for long-term access when digital storefronts eventually close or licenses change.
For players in the GCC who prefer to buy, trade or resell physical games, the disc version is the one to pick, and it will keep working regardless of future store changes.
