Gears of War: E-Day’s multiplayer beta has become the biggest Steam showing in the franchise’s history. During its early access phase, the beta reached a peak of 14,331 concurrent players on Steam, passing the previous series record set by Gears 5, which peaked at a little over 10,000. The open beta weekend that followed pushed the count past the old record again.

What E-Day is

Gears of War: E-Day is a prequel set during Emergence Day, the moment the Locust first burst out of the ground and attacked humanity on the planet Sera. It tells the origin of the conflict that defines the whole series, years before the events of the original 2006 Gears of War, and it is being developed by The Coalition for Xbox Game Studios.

The game is scheduled to launch on October 6, 2026 on Xbox Series X|S and PC, and it will be available on Game Pass Ultimate from day one. That means Steam players are only part of the audience, which makes the Steam record more notable: Gears has traditionally been strongest on Xbox consoles rather than on Valve’s platform. Many Game Pass players on PC access the game through the Xbox app instead of Steam, so the true beta audience was larger than the Steam figure alone.

How the beta worked

The beta ran in two phases. An early access phase from August 6 to 10 was limited to players who had pre-ordered the game and Game Pass Ultimate subscribers. An open beta from August 13 to 17 removed those restrictions so anyone could play.

Two modes were available. Versus was the competitive player-versus-player mode, while Horde brought a larger 12-player version of the series’ wave-survival mode, throwing increasingly aggressive enemies at teams across wide open maps. The larger Horde size is one of the clearest changes from earlier Gears games and appears to be a big part of the beta’s appeal.

What this means going forward

Beta numbers are not sales figures, and they do not guarantee how many people will stay after launch. Many players join a free beta weekend simply to try a game. Still, breaking series records on Steam before release shows real interest from PC players, an audience Gears has struggled to reach in the past.

The real test comes after launch day. Whether E-Day holds its population will depend on how the campaign is received, how quickly The Coalition balances multiplayer, and how much new content arrives after release.

Why it matters

For Gears as a franchise, this is a needed win. The series has had its ups and downs over the years, and a successful E-Day could give the whole property momentum again, especially on PC.

For players in the Middle East, the day-one Game Pass Ultimate release is the practical point: subscribers can play the full game on October 6 without buying it, on console or PC.
