Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog are showing how Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis reshapes the franchise’s core gameplay. Through a behind-the-scenes mini-documentary series, the studios have revealed their approach to overhauling combat and character progression in this remake of the original 1996 Tomb Raider. The game launches on February 12, 2027.

Release date, platforms and price

Legacy of Atlantis is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. The Standard Edition costs $59.99 and the Deluxe Edition $69.99, with the Deluxe version adding 48-hour early access from February 10, an extra outfit and post-launch story DLC. It is built on Unreal Engine 5.

What changes in combat

Flying Wild Hog, known for the Shadow Warrior series and hard-hitting action design, brings that expertise to a franchise traditionally anchored in exploration and puzzle-solving. The result is a more aggressive, skill-based take on Lara’s fights.

The key new system is Focus, a meter that lets Lara slow down time for precise shots. Focus builds through dealing damage, taking damage or dodging, and it ties into the acrobatic flips that defined combat in the original PS1 game. Lara carries four main weapons built for different ranges: dual pistols, a shotgun, an SMG and an assault rifle.

What changes in progression

The original 1996 game had no character progression at all; Lara simply found new weapons and ammunition. Legacy of Atlantis adds a skill tree and crafting, borrowing ideas from the Survivor trilogy that ran from 2013 to 2018. Gamereactor reported that crafting includes brewing potions from herbs for temporary buffs.

The developers stress that these systems are flexible. Design director Jason Epps said players can stick with the classic dual pistols for the whole game if they want to. Separate difficulty settings for combat and puzzles also return from Shadow of the Tomb Raider, alongside new tools such as a grappling hook and an archaeological scanner.

How fans are reacting

Early fan reaction to the skill tree has been mixed, with some players questioning why an experienced adventurer like Lara needs to unlock abilities. The development team’s answer is choice: players who want a purer classic experience can largely ignore the extra systems.

The mini-documentary approach reflects a wider industry trend of studios using behind-the-scenes content to explain design decisions before launch. Further episodes are expected to cover more of the game’s systems.

Why it matters

For a franchise returning to its mythological roots with Atlantis at the center, how combat and character growth feel will shape the whole adventure. Legacy of Atlantis is clearly a substantial reimagining rather than a simple remaster.

For long-time fans, the separate difficulty settings are the key detail, because they let players keep puzzles challenging while tuning combat to their taste.
