Blizzard is preparing to add a third pillar to its World of Warcraft ecosystem with the upcoming release of World of Warcraft: Forever. As detailed in a recent report from GamesRadar+, the developer is aiming to expand the reach of the franchise without splitting its existing community.

Balancing the WoW Ecosystem

Currently, the developer maintains two distinct versions of the game: modern retail World of Warcraft and World of Warcraft: Classic. With Forever, Blizzard hopes to capture a demographic that feels underserved by the current offerings. In an interview with PC Gamer, game director Ion Hazzikostas explained that while modern WoW might feel too fast for some, Classic can sometimes feel too “janky” or dated for others.

“Our belief is that Forever will offer something that appeals to a lot of folks who maybe aren’t currently well-served by what they see from WoW,” Hazzikostas said. The developer emphasized that the initiative is intended to be a welcoming point for both newcomers and players whose subscriptions to other versions of the game have lapsed. Addressing concerns about community fragmentation, Hazzikostas stated, “Our hope is to grow the audience, not to fracture it.”

Why it matters

For players, the introduction of Forever represents an attempt to bridge the gap between the high-speed modern experience and the 2004-era mechanics of Classic. Blizzard is positioning this as a way to bring fresh faces into the fold while offering returning players a new way to engage with Azeroth. Senior game designer Josh Greenfield has noted that the project is already generating significant engagement, reporting some of the highest numbers he has seen in his 17-year tenure at the company.

While the focus remains on the first year of the new version, Blizzard has teased that the world could eventually expand to include regions like Northrend and Pandaria. For now, the goal remains clear: providing a third, distinct “flavor” of the game to ensure there is a version of WoW that suits every type of player.
