For gamers who have been burned by lackluster video game adaptations in the past, the upcoming live-action Street Fighter movie is aiming to earn your trust through sheer commitment. In a recent interview with GamesRadar+, Callina Liang, who plays the iconic Chun-Li, detailed the intense physical and technical preparation she underwent to ensure her portrayal stays faithful to the source material.
Dedicated to the craft
Liang revealed that her preparation went far beyond standard acting rehearsals. To physically embody the character, she maintained a rigorous diet, consuming 12 eggs a day and eating a meal every two hours. This regimen resulted in her thighs growing over 6.5cm in just a few months to better match Chun-Li’s legendary stature. Beyond the physical transformation, Liang spent significant time studying the character’s entire gaming history, meticulously practicing every signature move to ensure they could be translated accurately to the big screen.
“I think because I was such a big fan of the character Chun-Li, and I knew that she’s such a beloved, iconic video game character, I just didn’t want to disappoint the fans,” Liang explained to GamesRadar+. She emphasized that the film is a passion project, describing it as being “made by fans, for fans.”
Production-wide attention to detail
It isn’t just the lead actors sweating the details. According to actor Noah Centineo, who plays Ken in the film, the production team has taken a similarly deep dive into Capcom’s source material. Centineo noted that Jon Valera researched every character in the roster to ensure their specific fighting styles remain recognizable to long-time players. The film is currently scheduled to hit theaters on October 16.
Why it matters
For the Street Fighter community, this level of granular research suggests a production that respects the legacy of the arcade era. Often, live-action adaptations fail when they ignore the specific mechanics and physical nuances that define a character for the player base. By actively hiring actors and crew members who are studying the source games, the production is signaling a shift toward authentic representation.
Players should keep an eye on how these signature moves translate during the film’s fight sequences. With the focus explicitly placed on mimicking game-accurate combat, fans can watch for whether the choreography successfully captures the weight and impact of the legendary fighter’s moveset.
