If you are sticking around through the theater lights to see what director Kitao Sakurai’s live-action adaptation of the iconic Capcom fighting game series has to offer, you are not alone. As reported by Kotaku, the film is officially out in theaters now, and those who remain for the post-credits sequence get a glimpse into the future of the franchise. The mid-credits scene marks a notable departure from the live-action format used for the main body of the movie, opting instead for animation to set the stage for a potential sequel.

The post-credits scene explained

While the Street Fighter film utilizes animated sequences throughout its runtime, these instances are typically reserved for flashbacks. The mid-credits scene breaks this pattern to provide a status update on Sagat. Fans will remember Sagat from the film opening, where he serves as the final opponent for Ryu in the first World Warrior tournament. The credits scene shows him training with palpable anger, clearly still feeling the sting of his defeat at the hands of Ryu.

During this intense training session, Sagat is approached by a group including M. Bison, Vega, Cammy, and Juli. According to Kotaku, they are presumably there to recruit him into their fold to further their evil cause. As noted by Kotaku, this animated approach for Sagat likely stems from the production not yet having cast an actor for the character. Even his grunts during the training sequence do not have a credit attached to them. By keeping the scene animated, the filmmakers successfully confirm Sagat will make a proper live-action debut in a follow-up without being locked into a specific casting choice for the role of Ryu’s rival.

Why it matters

For players, this scene acts as a signal that the creative team is eyeing a sequel. This is particularly relevant because the current film does not resolve its main conflict, with the arrival of Akuma at the eleventh hour usurping the villainous role from M. Bison. Whether this narrative thread pays off depends on the film performing well enough to get a sequel greenlit. As the franchise has seen shifting fortunes in its gaming life, with producers previously noting that the IP needed revitalization following Street Fighter 5, the film represents an attempt to bridge the gap between the initial entry and the broader, more iconic roster of fighters players have come to expect from the series. Fans waiting for more should keep an eye on the film commercial performance, as that remains the final deciding factor for the continuation of this live-action universe.
