Just when you thought CD Projekt Red might finally move on to their next slate of massive projects, they have dropped yet another surprise for Night City. As reported by GamesRadar+, the 2.5 update is now live, having launched last week. This latest release introduces a host of new features that add significant depth to the sprawling open-world RPG, continuing a trend of support that has spanned almost six years since the game’s initial, albeit disastrous, launch.
Following the major 2023 release of the Phantom Liberty expansion, many assumed the studio would shift focus entirely. However, update 2.5 proves that CD Projekt Red remains dedicated to evolving this title. The update is far from a simple bug fix patch. Headlining the additions is a new quest line that serves as a prequel story to the upcoming Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2 on Netflix. Beyond this narrative expansion, the studio has introduced several highly requested mechanical changes, including the ability to dual-wield pistols and revolvers. Players can also now access official mod support for console versions, a new City Tours feature for exploring the sights of Night City, new clothing sets, and an additional radio station to soundtrack their excursions.
These updates arrive as the developer balances a massive pipeline of future projects, including the upcoming sequel codenamed Project Orion, a new Witcher 3 DLC, The Witcher 4, a remake of The Witcher 1, and an original IP codenamed Hadar. Despite these heavy commitments, CD Projekt Red has continued to dedicate resources to their established RPG, even noting that they have hired so many modders that the Cyberpunk sequel co-lead estimates half of the current quest team consists of former modders.
Why it matters
For players, the 2.5 update represents a continued commitment to evolving the game years after its launch, effectively cementing its legacy as a generational RPG far removed from its half-baked state. According to associate game director Paweł Sasko, the goal of this update is to make the environment feel richer, more coherent, and more believable. By integrating elements from other media like the Edgerunners series, the studio aims to create a more unified shared universe where different stories and perspectives coalesce within the same city. Sasko notes that this world keeps giving the team reasons to return to it, and he hopes players enjoy returning to the city that remembers all of these different stories, people, and media. Whether you are a veteran mercenary looking for an excuse to jump back into Night City or a new player interested in the connection to the Edgerunners universe, this update provides significant new ways to customize the experience.
